Indigo is proud to sponsor the YES22 People Choice award – but who will win?

“We are proud to have sponsored the YES People’s Choice award for over a decade now.” said Robert Fisher of Indigo. ”Having a brilliant mind and amazing ideas is at the heart of this competition – translating ideas into something that investors would want to fund, means you need to get your message across with #clarity, #brevity, and #impact. That’s why, for every member of the People’s Choice winning team, we provide a place on our Think on Your Feet® workshop – worth £875 per person! We help budding entrepreneurs deliver the perfect pitch, deal with tough questions and control those crucial conversations for success. Think on Your Feet® adds structure and impact to everything you say, even when there’s little or no time to prepare.”

The Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) is an innovative global competition developed to raise awareness among Master and PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, research fellows and technicians how ideas can be commercialised.

For the past 27 years, teams, united by a dedication to their subject, curiosity, enthusiasm and a desire to learn, attempt to deploy novel science and engineering to address societal challenges such as the ageing population, sustainable food production and global warming. In this way, they develop a business plan for a start-up company based on a hypothetical but plausible idea.

Online on Friday 27 January we will listen to the six teams shortlisted to pitch at the YES22 Final.

  • Algaemino (University of Reading) produces seaweed protein powder using minimal processing and is nutritional, sustainable, low-sodium, low allergenicity and complements a plant-based diet.
  • Gluca-one (Keele University) has designed a wearable device which reacts to your blood sugar levels and administers glucagon when they drop dangerously low.
  • MindX Lab® (University of Reading) provides an alternative for treatment of mental health issues embedded in a new sustainable delivery method.
  • NottFur (University of Nottingham) manufactures sustainable, vegan, lab-grown fur to counter the use of animals in the fashion industry and reduces the use of plastic alternatives.
  • Patch Perspective (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and University of Leicester) is developing a skin patch to promote the healing of diabetic ulcers in patients.
  • SUSU (John Innes Centre & Quadram Institute) provides a data-driven and protected B12-producing probiotic strain that can successfully enrich both plant-based and dairy yoghurt.

Ariadna Miquel-Clopes, Maria Solsona-Gaya, Glória Máté-Koncz and Federico Bernuzzi from the Quadram Institute recently attended a Think on Your Feet® workshop as winners of the YES21 People’s Choice award.

“It was an intense course but we loved learning how to communicate our ideas better! Some of the techniques can be easily implemented in our daily lives such as a scientific presentation, at a conference or during an interview. And with further practise it will help us answer questions on the spot with much more confidence. Both the face-to-face and online sessions were very dynamic – we highly recommend this workshop!”

Good luck all our finalists!!
